Breaking: Spotify Rolls Out Green Checkmark to Identify Real Artists

Spotify is introducing a mint green verification badge for artist profiles, starting April 30, to help listeners distinguish authentic human musicians from AI-generated fakes. The feature, called Verified by Spotify, will appear on profiles of artists who pass a rigorous review process.

"We’ll pair these standards with human review and judgment to identify real artists behaving in good faith," Spotify said in a statement. "This gives you a more reliable signal of the authentic artistry behind the music."

The company claims that more than 99% of artists that users actively search for will be verified at launch.

Background: AI Scams Plague Streaming Platforms

The verification badge comes amid a surge of AI-generated music scams. Recently, a song attributed to country singer Blaze Foley—who died in 1989—was discovered to be AI-made and uploaded to Spotify by scammers seeking royalty payments.

Such fraudulent tracks have become increasingly common, exploiting streaming services and confusing listeners. Spotify has previously implemented Artist Profile Protection, which requires artists to manually approve new songs on their profiles, and added AI disclosure rules and a spam filter.

"In today’s music landscape, the concept of artist authenticity is complex and quickly evolving," Spotify noted, adding that its approach will continue to develop over time.

How the Verification Works

Spotify evaluates multiple criteria before awarding the badge, including listener activity, engagement trends, and an identifiable artist presence both on and off the platform. Human reviewers also examine each profile to ensure good-faith behavior.

The badge will appear as a mint green checkmark next to the artist's name, visible to all users on desktop and mobile. Listeners can expect to see the badges in the coming weeks.

New 'Artist Details' Section

Alongside the badge, Spotify is testing a beta section on artist profiles that resembles nutritional facts labels. Regardless of verification status, this area shows career milestones, release history, and touring activity, giving listeners more context about the artist behind the music.

What This Means for Listeners and Artists

For listeners, the green check offers a quick, visual cue that the music they're hearing comes from a verified human artist—not an AI impersonator. This builds trust in a time when AI-generated content is flooding social media and streaming platforms.

For artists, especially independent ones, being verified can boost credibility and help them stand out. However, the system is not foolproof; Spotify acknowledges that safeguards will need to evolve alongside AI technology.

"Our goal is to make it easier for you to trust and understand the human artistry behind the music you listen to," Spotify said. The badge is just one step in an ongoing effort to protect the integrity of the music ecosystem.
